Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s SEA Games contingent surged to second place in the medal standings after collecting 31 gold medals through Saturday, prompting President Prabowo Subianto to praise athletes for representing the nation with pride.

Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir said Prabowo viewed competition at the SEA Games as a national duty, not merely sport, because athletes compete to raise Indonesia’s flag and anthem before other nations.

As a sign of support, Prabowo sent greetings to all Indonesian athletes competing at the biennial regional event, Thohir said in a statement issued on Sunday.

The president thanked medal winners for their dedication and urged all athletes to remain fully committed through the final day, maintaining focus, discipline, mental strength and belief, which he described as keys to victory.

Prabowo also said the government would reward gold medalists with bonuses of 1 billion rupiah ($64,900) each, calling the incentive a form of national appreciation for sporting heroes.

Indonesia added to its silver tally on Saturday through wushu, with podium finishes in the men’s weapon duilian taolu and the women’s barehanded duilian taolu team events.

Competing at the Government Complex Building C in Bangkok’s Lak Si district, the Indonesian men’s trio of Edgar Xavier Marvelo, Ahmad Ghifari Fuaiz and Seraf Nano Siregar scored 9.740 points.

Thailand claimed gold in the event with 9.763 points, while Brunei Darussalam took bronze on 9.736 points.

The women’s duilian taolu team also secured silver, further boosting Indonesia’s overall medal count.

According to the Indonesian Olympic Committee, the country stood on 31 golds, 46 silvers and 41 bronzes after Saturday’s competitions.

Host nation Thailand tightened its grip on the top position with 92 gold medals, alongside 61 silvers and 39 bronzes.

Vietnam slipped to third, trailing Indonesia by a single gold medal, with totals of 30 golds, 27 silvers and 54 bronzes. Singapore remained fourth after adding four gold medals, bringing its haul to 19 golds, 19 silvers and 26 bronzes.

The Philippines stayed fifth with 15 golds, 22 silvers and 50 bronzes, while Malaysia held sixth place on 15 golds, 15 silvers and 53 bronzes.

Myanmar ranked seventh with two golds, followed by Laos in eighth. Brunei Darussalam sat ninth, while Timor-Leste remained without a medal.
