Jakarta (ANTARA) - Research support from Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is seen as crucial to strengthening the country’s aerospace industry, PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) stated on Thursday.

“With BRIN’s support, we are optimistic about reinforcing Indonesia’s position in the global aerospace supply chain,” PTDI President Director Gita Amperiawan said in a statement on Thursday as the state-owned manufacturer intensifies efforts to boost industrial independence and domestic content.

He noted that PTDI remains the only aerospace company in Southeast Asia with comprehensive capabilities in aircraft design, manufacturing, and maintenance, and it continues to develop globally competitive products.

On Wednesday, BRIN Head Arif Satria visited PTDI’s production facilities in Bandung, stressing that aerospace research must be aligned with industry needs and deliver tangible economic impact.

“We must ensure that every aerospace research activity generates added value for the national industry,” he said.

Satria highlighted PTDI’s strategic role as a hub for high-technology innovation and pledged BRIN’s support through research funding, shared laboratory facilities, and strengthening human resources to accelerate innovation downstreaming.

A key focus of the visit was the N219 Nurtanio aircraft, jointly developed by BRIN and PTDI.

The twin-engine plane is designed to improve connectivity in Indonesia’s remote regions.

Satria emphasized its Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) capability, which enables operations on runways shorter than 800 meters, including unpaved strips.

“The N219 offers a vital solution for areas such as Papua’s mountainous terrain and other frontier or outermost regions,” he said.
