Pangkalpinang (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), in Pangkalpinang City, Bangka Belitung Islands, has urged residents of West Bangka District to remain alert to the potential for heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds, which could trigger flooding, landslides, and fallen trees.

“Today, there is potential for extreme rainfall in West Bangka,” said Head of the Pangkalpinang BMKG Tri Agus Pramono on Saturday.

He said the early weather warning issued for the Bangka Belitung Islands on Saturday indicated the potential for moderate to heavy rain accompanied by lightning, thunder, and strong winds in Mentok and surrounding areas of West Bangka District.

The adverse weather conditions are also expected to affect Sungailiat, Belinyu, West Mendo, Pemali, Merawang, Bakam, Riau Silip, and Puding Besar sub-districts in Bangka District, as well as Tanjung Pandan, Selat Nasik, Sijuk, and Badau sub-districts in Belitung District.

Similar conditions could extend to South Bangka District, including Toboali, Air Gegas, Simpang Rimba, Payung, Pulau Besar, and the Pongok Islands, as well as to Central Bangka District, covering Sungai Selan, Simpang Katis, and surrounding areas.

The potential for extreme heavy rain is also forecast for Simpang Teritip, Jebus, Kelapa, Tempilang, and Parit Tiga in West Bangka District, and may extend to Manggar, Kelapa Kampit, Damar, Simpang Renggiang, and nearby areas in East Belitung District.

“This weather forecast has been conveyed to all regional disaster mitigation agencies(BPBD) across the Bangka Belitung Islands so they can anticipate and remain alert to the impacts of this extreme weather,” Pramono said.
