Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology has forged cooperation with the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) to strengthen research and innovation aimed at improving the quality and safety of drugs and food.

The partnership was formalized through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by Higher Education Minister Brian Yuliarto and BPOM Head Taruna Ikrar in Jakarta on Wednesday (Jan. 28), according to a statement received on Thursday.

"Our growing independence in the drug and food industries has prompted us to work in innovative and creative ways," Yuliarto noted.

He emphasized that partnering with BPOM represents the ministry's strategic step toward making education, research, and technology more impactful for industries and the wider public.

The MoU, he continued, lays the foundation for the two institutions to carry out joint initiatives that facilitate collaboration among academicians, business actors, and the government, while also providing opportunities for researchers to utilize BPOM’s facilities.

The minister expressed hope that such collaboration will enhance the quality of research and academic publications, which, in turn, are expected to stimulate innovations that can be adopted by industries.

He also addressed the business community, inviting industrial actors to actively contribute by absorbing and transforming university research into valuable, competitive products.

"We in government are ready to guide researchers and professors in conducting research, including through financial support," Yuliarto remarked.

Meanwhile, BPOM Head Ikrar highlighted that the MoU was signed as the agency celebrated its 25th anniversary.

He noted that the cooperation agreement is expected to advance the development of science, technology, and innovative medicines, bringing Indonesia closer to its vision of a golden centennial year in 2045.

Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining the implementation of the MoU to ensure that national research delivers tangible benefits to the nation.
