Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) of the Law Ministry is committed to increasing the number of registered domestic patents, following the declaration of 2026 as the year of the patent.

Director General of Intellectual Property, Hermansyah Siregar, stated that the increase in registered domestic patents is an important indicator of the progress of national innovation. Patents reflect the nation's ability to produce original technological solutions.

"Registered domestic patents demonstrate that innovation is born and developing in Indonesia. This is evidence of national capacity to create technology, not just adopt it," Siregar said in a statement in Jakarta on Wednesday.

DJKI prioritizes resolving the patent examination backlog as a first step in encouraging increased national patent registrations. This is done to provide legal certainty and increase the confidence of domestic inventors.

"Resolving the backlog is key to ensuring faster and higher-quality patent services. With an increasingly reliable examination system, investors will be more encouraged to register their patents," he said.

Furthermore, DJKI also plans to strengthen collaboration with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). The collaboration includes utilizing BRIN experts in patent examinations and patent document writing training for researchers.

"We are promoting synergy with BRIN so that national research results can be optimally protected and lead to an increase in registered domestic patents," Siregar explained.

Meanwhile, Andrieansjah, an official of the ministry, explained that the increase in registered domestic patents is being achieved through a number of technical and operational measures.

The measures, he said, include accelerating examinations, strengthening examiner management, and improving the quality of patent applications.

"We are structuring the patent examination process more systemically to expedite application completion without compromising quality. This is part of our effort to increase the confidence of domestic patent applicants," he said.

He added that improving the capacity of human resources for patent examiners is a key focus in supporting the target. This effort is being carried out through improving competency, managing workloads, and strengthening the professionalism of examiners.

"Examiner human resources are key. Therefore, we continue to encourage increased capacity and professionalism to ensure more reliable patent services," he said.

In addition, the DJKI is also encouraging improvements in the quality of patent applications through mentoring and training. The activities are intended to enable domestic inventors and researchers to prepare patent documents that meet examination standards.

"With better application quality, the examination process will be more effective, and the chances of patent registration will also increase," he said.
