Jakarta (ANTARA) - Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Arifah Fauzi has called for the creation of a safe digital space where children can learn, play, interact, and express themselves without exposure to violence or inappropriate content.

“The state is responsible for fulfilling children’s rights to access information and benefit from the digital space. Both aspects must be balanced to ensure children receive fair opportunities online,” she said in Jakarta on Thursday.

Fauzi noted that the rapid expansion of digital platforms requires a shift in how society views the online environment.

“Protection is no longer just about limiting a child’s access. It is about ensuring that digital systems and ecosystems are designed in accordance with the principles of child protection, the best interests of the child, and respect for their rights,” she said.

She emphasized that protecting children in the digital sphere requires active participation from all stakeholders.

According to the minister, the government must establish firm policies and regulations while ensuring effective oversight and law enforcement, including through the implementation of the Roadmap for Child Protection in the Digital Space.

At the same time, digital system providers and platform operators are required to ensure child-friendly designs, including robust privacy settings, effective content moderation, and accessible and responsive reporting mechanisms.

Fauzi also urged parents and teachers to act as adaptive guides who can help strengthen children’s digital literacy, critical thinking skills, and confidence to report situations that make them feel uncomfortable.

“Through a child-friendly digital ecosystem, we are not only protecting them from harm but also paving the way for a superior, creative, and competitive Indonesian generation in the digital era,” she said.

To support these efforts, the government has issued Government Regulation Number 17 of 2025 on the Governance of Electronic Systems in Child Protection.

The regulation obliges platform providers to filter content that may harm children and to verify users’ ages, among other requirements.
