Jakarta (ANTARA) -
Indonesia will investigate alleged illegal levies linked to a government-run free sea homecoming program at Nusantara Port in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi, Deputy Transportation Minister Suntana said on Saturday.

“We will look into it later,” Suntana said when asked about reports of unlawful charges in the program.

The alleged practice occurred in the free sea transport service operating on the Kendari–Muna–Baubau shipping route.

The government launched the program to help people travel home during the Eid al-Fitr holiday by providing free transportation across several modes.

Responding to the allegations, Suntana said authorities would examine the system used in implementing the program to determine whether violations had occurred.

If wrongdoing is confirmed, the government will not hesitate to take firm action against any parties responsible, he added.

The deputy minister emphasized that the free homecoming initiative is funded by the state and intended to provide public services for travelers.

Because the program is financed through government funds, all services under it must be completely free of charge for passengers.

“Free homecoming programs cover several sectors. There are air, sea and rail services provided by the government,” Suntana said.

“If there are irregularities, we will take action and correct them as soon as possible,” he added.

The free travel initiative is designed to reduce transportation costs for the public while improving safety and mobility during the busy Eid holiday period.

Millions of Indonesians travel across the archipelago during Eid each year to return to their hometowns, creating one of the world’s largest seasonal migrations.

Government programs offering free travel are therefore aimed at easing congestion and providing safer alternatives for travelers.

Suntana said the ministry would continue monitoring the program closely to ensure it operates according to its intended objectives.

Authorities will also respond to any complaints from the public to maintain accountability in public service delivery.

“It will certainly be dealt with firmly. If those providing public services commit wrongdoing, we must take firm action,” he said.

The Transportation Ministry has prepared around 6,000 free ship tickets for passengers using the Kendari–Raha–Baubau route in Southeast Sulawesi.

The tickets are expected to help residents travel between the islands safely and affordably during the Eid holiday season.

Officials said the program is part of broader government efforts to ensure smoother transportation services during the annual homecoming period.
