Indonesia’s police chief on Tuesday urged travelers to use a work-from-anywhere (WFA) policy to stagger post-Eid journeys, as authorities deployed traffic measures to ease congestion during the peak return period.
National Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo said the policy allows flexibility for people returning to major cities after the Eid al-Fitr holiday.
Speaking at the opening of a national one-way return route at Kalikangkung toll gate in Central Java, he said the measure aims to reduce traffic buildup during peak days.
“So, if anyone wants to return, they can choose March 25, 26, or 27,” he said, reiterating earlier guidance to spread out travel and smooth peak flows.
Authorities have prepared several strategies to manage the surge, including implementing a national one-way traffic system along key sections of the Trans-Java toll road.
The system runs from KM 414 at Kalikangkung toll gate to KM 70 on the Jakarta-Cikampek toll road, one of the busiest corridors leading to the capital.

“We divide traffic to avoid bottlenecks when approaching Jakarta. Functional toll roads and traffic engineering measures will also be used,” Listyo said.
He urged travelers to prioritize safety, advising them to use rest areas, service posts and integrated service centers provided along major routes.
“We hope tired travelers will take time to rest and avoid overexertion,” he added.
The one-way route was officially launched on Tuesday by Listyo alongside senior ministers overseeing human development, transportation and health.
Those attending included Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno, Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi, and Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin.
The policy forms part of broader government efforts to manage one of the world’s largest seasonal migrations, when millions travel to hometowns before returning to urban centers.
Beyond KM 70 at Cikampek Utama toll gate, additional traffic measures will be enforced to prevent congestion as vehicles approach the greater Jakarta area.
Authorities expect the staggered travel approach and coordinated traffic management to reduce delays and improve safety during the high-volume return period.
