The ministry's Secretary, Gunawan Suswantoro, said the National Sports Academy and National Team Training Center will be built to support the development of 21 priority sports designated by President Prabowo Subianto.
"The goal is to train selected athletes to become world-class athletes," he said on Monday.
All sports facilities and infrastructure will be built in an integrated manner on 500 hectares of land designated by the central government in the Candali-Cimulang area of Rancabungur Sub-district.
According to him, the facilities stretch beyond competition and training arenas, but also education centers, sports research, and athlete dormitories. The sports facilities provided include aquatics, athletics, badminton, rock climbing, soccer, martial arts, and rowing, all of which are listed as 21 nationally superior sports.
In addition, the area will also be equipped with a special athlete school for elementary, middle, and high school levels to support the long-term development of young athletes.
Suswantoro said athletes joining the sports academy will be drawn from across the country through a selection process focused on their potential and performance in their respective sports.
The construction of the national sports center is estimated to cost around Rp5 trillion (US$277 million) over a three-year period. This year, the central government is focusing on synchronizing planning and administration across ministries and institutions to ensure effective and efficient development.
Physical construction is scheduled to begin in 2027 and continue through 2028, with completion targeted for early 2029.
Meanwhile, Bogor District Head Rudy Susmanto said the total area being prepared spans around 750 hectares, consisting of 500 hectares managed by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and approximately 250 hectares allocated for the Ministry of Defense.
“The remaining 250 hectares will be used to expand land for Kopassus (army's special strike force) and to build a university,” he said.
