Jakarta (ANTARA News) - State railway company PT Kereta Api (PTKA) eventually announced a 15-75 pct hike in the economy class rates as of Saturday, January 8, 2011.

Commercial director of PTKA Sulistyo Wimbo Hardjito told the press here Friday that a rate increase for the economy class train had become urgent as operational and maintenance costs had increased.

"The other factors include the inflation and the limited public service obligation (PSO) from the government, especially that the rate remained unchanged from 2002 to 2008, and even dropped in 2009," he said.

The rate increase consists of five kinds, namely long-distance Rp4,000-Rp8,500, medium distance Rp1,000-Rp5,500, and short distances Rp500-Rp2,000, diesel trains Rp500-Rp1,500, and electric trains Rp500-Rp2,000.

For electric trains (KRL) Jakarta-Bogor raised by 75 pct (Rp 2,000) to Rp3.500 per passenger.

Manggarai-Bogor to Rp3.000 from Rp2,000 per passenger, Jakarta-Bojonggede Rp3,000, and Jakarta-Depok raised from Rp1,500 to Rp2,500 per passenger.
Tanabang-Bogor Rp3,000, and Depok-Tanabang Rp2.500 per passenger, Jakarta-Bekasi Rp2,500 from Rp1,500 per passenger.(*)
