Lebak, Banten (ANTARA News) - The number of people with HIV-AIDS in Lebak district, Banten province from 2000 to December 2010 reached 53 and 15 of them had died, a local official said here, Tuesday.

"Most of the 53 sufferers were women and allegedly infected due to free sexual intercourse," Head of Family Planning and Reproductive Health division of Empowerment of Women, Family Planning, Rural Community agency of Lebak district, Mandat Sukana noted.

According to Mandat, the HIV-AIDS patients consisted of 31 with HIV and 23 with AIDS.

HIV-AIDS combat efforts must involve all stakeholders including local administration, officials, religious leaders, press as well as community organizations.

Currently, the spread of HIV-AIDS in Lebak has become a serious threat because the disease is fatal, Mandat said.

The spread of the disease is spread by free sexual intercourse, the repeated use of syringes among drug users, blood transfusion and breast feeding mothers with HIV-AIDS.(*)
