Last year, Chunghwa Picture Tubes, AU Optronics, Chimei Innolux Corp., BenQ, and ASUSTek Computer Inc. together reduced their packaging materials by 3,700 tons, far exceeding the target of 870 tons, Shen said during an event held to publicize the government`s efforts to promote eco-friendly packaging.
The minister said the EPA will expand the campaign this year to the houseware and packaging design sectors, adding 11 manufacturers, with a total of 15 products, to the waste reduction effort.
Lin Chuan-kuei, a quality control director for ASUS, said his company has successfully lowered its packaging costs by 40 percent by cutting down the weight of boxes used to package computers from 890 grams to 630 grams per unit and using eco-friendly materials for packaging, such as soy-based ink.
At the event, paper-maker Cheng Long Corp. unveiled a new packaging design for liquor products. Composed with recycled paper, the new packaging is 540 grams lighter and four times cheaper than the voluminous, multi-layered packaging currently used in the industry.
