Padang, West Sumatera (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian and Iranian governments have agreed to strengthen partnership in marine and fishery, as the joint venture will be implemented based on applicable law and regulations in both countries.

"The improved cooperation in the marine and fishery affairs includes fishing, fish farming and also fish hatchery and spawning," stated the Minister of marine Affairs and Fishery Fadel Muhammad in the release which was conveyed by Head of Information and Statistic data Central Yulistyo Mudho here Wednesday.

Yulistyo quoted Fadel as saying that the partnership was a follow up of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in Tehran in 2005.

The agreement, Yulistyo added, was discussed by Iranian Agriculture Minister Sadegh Khalilan at the Ministry of marine Affairs and Fishery, here Wednesday.

"The honor visit of Iranian Minister is also the first meeting of Joint Technical Committee," said he.

Meanwhile, the other sector involved in the partnership was marine fisheries conservation, including mangrove forest development and artificial reefs. Moreover, the partnership would be improved by establishing research and development, training and education through experts exchange and field visit, as well as improvement after crops and marketing.

Based on data of export trade in Indonesia, the fish products from RI to Iran in 2009 was 2.02 thousand tons with its export value amounting 3.03 million US dollar which came from three main export commodities, namely tuna, lobster and other fish. And the number increased 280 percent in 2010 which became 7.4 million US dollar. The main export product was pre cooked loin tuna which reached about 3.4 million US dollar for its export value in 2010.

"The exports showed that Iran is one of the destinations, so the partnership between the two countries needs to be strengthened," he said.
