London (ANTARA News) - Dubai police said it would help the Indonesian Consulate General in the UAR town handle criminal cases involving Indonesians there.

The statement was made by Dubai police chief Lt Gen Dhahi Khalfan Tamim when meeting Indonesian Consul General in Dubai Mansyur Pangeran, first secretary for information, social and cultural affairs in Dubai Adiguna Wseijaya told Antara`s News London correspondent Saturday.

He said that 90,000 Indonesians are working in Dubai and its surroundings, mostly in the informal sector.

Lt Gen Dhahi Khalfan had been the Dubai police chief since 1980 and a member of the Dubai administrations` executive council.

He said the number of Indonesians in Dubai was not as many as that of nationals from other countries, like those from South Asia, including India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and the Philippines.

He also said that there are cases which involved Indonesians in Dubai. They are still under investigation, facing trial, or imprisoned.

He said that the Indonesian government has been trying to reduce the number of unskilled Indonesians in the informal sector and increase the skilled and well-trained ones in the formal sector overseas like in hotels, shipping, hospitals, restaurants and banks.

Commenting on this, he also said that right now the number of foreign workers is less that locals, but the government of Dubai hoped an increase in the number of foreigners working and staying in Dubai, including Indonesians.

Both sides during the meeting also discussed the general condition and development of trade and economy of Indonesia in Dubai.

Dhahi was rather shocked when Mansyur told him that one of the most popular cars in Dubai, Toyota Innova, were built in Indonesia.

He was also told that many famous products in the world had opened a factory and produced their products in Indonesia.
