"Based on the results of a KPK study, the Home Affairs Minister should stop using regional budgets to assist professional football clubs," KPK Deputy Chairman M Jasin said here on Tuesday.
The suggestion to discontinue using regional budgets (APBDs), according to Jasin, was made based on an indication of several violations of the funds utilization for the professional soccer clubs.
In addition, the commission had also found indications of conflicts of interest in the use of the budgets for professional soccer teams due to regional heads of government had concurrent position as chairmen or soccer managers, he said.
Citing an example, Jasin said a certain regional government was able to raise budget about 10 billion rupiah for a soccer club, but failed to provide funds that aimed to enhance the community`s economy.
In the meantime, Home Affairs Minister Gamawan Fauzi agreed with the commission`s suggestion on the cessation of the flow of budget for the professional soccer clubs.
Gamawan stressed that the professional soccer clubs strive to seek funding from sponsors for the clubs operation.
Meanwhile, Youth and Sports Minister Andi Mallarangeng also agreed that budget should be used for activities of amateur soccer players to get good quality ones.(*)
