Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia`s coffee industries represented by the Association of Indonesian Coffee Exporters (AEKI) and the Indonesian Specialty Coffee Association (AKSI) promoted and marketed Indonesian coffee at the 23rd Exposition and Symposium of Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) in Houston, US, from April 28 to May 1.

The event was supported by the Indonesian agriculture ministry, the Indonesian Consulate General (KJRI) in Houston, the Indonesian embassy in Washington, KJRI Chicago and KJRI Los Angeles, Indonesian Consul General in Houston Al Busyra Basnur said in a press statement received by ANTARA here Monday.

The SCAA Expo and Symposium, the largest event of coffee specialy industry in US, was participated in by tens of coffee associations, 700 companies and thousands of coffee industry professionals from around 40 countries.

During the expo, the Indonesian delegation held several business meetings and reached coffee export deals with US businessmen. The United States is the world`s largest coffee market.

Up to the second day of the expo, 140 buyers have made business deals to import Indonesian coffee.

Consul General Al Busyra Basnur said that the participation of Indonesia in the expo was in the right time and strategic to boost Indonesian coffee exports.

"Specialty coffee which has special taste compared to ordinary coffee, has continued to reach market segment increase in the United States with a growth of around 20 percent over the past 25 years," Al Busrya Basnur said.

In a meeting with the Indonesian community in Houston on Saturday (April 30), Deputy Chairman of the Association of Indonesian Coffee Exporters Pranoto Soenarto said the number of Indonesian coffee farmers are around 8,000 and 80,000 people worked in coffee-related industries.

The next SCAA expositions and symposiums will be organzied in Portland (Oregon) in 2012, Boston (Massachusetts) in 2013, and in Seattle (Washington) in 2014 and 2015. (*)
