Obama and his wife Michelle landed in Air Force One in a windswept Dublin for a one-night stay during which the president will hold talks with Irish leaders and visit the tiny village of Moneygall, where his great-great-great grandfather lived.
The president will also give an open-air speech to an audience of thousands in Dublin.
On Tuesday, he will travel on to Britain for a state visit before attending the G8 summit in the French resort of Deauville and wrapping up his tour in Poland.
