Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Fadel Muhammad has asked higher education institutes to create reliable and capable human resources for maritime and fishery sector in Indonesia.

The minister made the request in his report to Vice President Boediono at Vice Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, May 26, 2011.

"Higher Education Cooperation Forum has a strategic significance in the development of maritime-and-fishery-related education and the national development in maritime and fishery sector," Fadel said.

He stated further that the main strategy in achieving the vision and mission of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry (KKP) was the improvement of human resources development in maritime and fishery sector.

According to the minister, it was a follow-up of the mandate of fishery law for the government to implement an international standard fishery-related education unit.

Fadel said every maritime and fisheries higher education institute has its own typical learning process, the type and amount of available facilities and infrastructure, educators and education.

He added that the characteristics as well as the diversity should be synergized and optimized in order to reach the goal of the education process.

One of the characteristics in marine and fisheries education, according to Fadel, is the need of very expensive facility and infrastructure, both in its operation and learning.

As an example, the fish catching learning process requires a fishing boat with its expensive facility and equipment, and it is also true with the fish cultivation and fishery product processing field.

Fadel said the high interest of both national and international companies to employ Indonesia workers in marine and fishery sector was seen in the International Job Fair on Marine and Fisheries (I`JO F.M 2011) which lasted from May 23-25.

According to him around 68 national and international companies, among others from Japan, China, Taiwan, South Korea, and Spain provided job opportunities to more than 10,000 workers from Indonesia in their marine and fishery sector.

He said the number of job applicants in the three-day international job fair reached around 40,000 people that would continue to increase through online application at www.jobfairkkp.com.

With quality education, Fadel said the Indonesian workers could get jobs, relevant to their skills and capability because it was part of KKP support to the national policy, namely "pro poor, pro growth; pro sustainability and pro job."(*)
