State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland declined to comment on the substance of their discussions except to characterize them as a "good conversation, productive on all issues."
Russia joined China this week in boycotting UN Security Council talks on a draft resolution condemning Syria`s crackdown on dissent despite mounting calls for stronger sanctions against President Bashar al-Assad`s regime.
"With regard to Syria, their discussion focused on action in the UN Security Council and how the US and Russia can work together to make sure that we can get to a UN Security Council resolution that supports peace and security in Syria," Nuland said.
Clinton has not spoken yet with her Chinese counterpart on the issue, Nuland said. (*)
