Solo, Central Java (ANTARA News) - The high level dialog on sustainable development in Solo, Central Java, has floated the idea of establishing a sustainable development council.

"Among the ideas developing in the dialog is an idea from some participants for the development of the mandate of ECOSOC for integration with UNEP and the study of the role of Sustainable Development Commission in view of the establishment of a Sustainable Development Council," environment minister Gusti Muhammad Hatta said here on Thursday.

The minister closed the dialog attended by participants from 90 countries and 56 UN agencies since Tuesday (July 19).

Gusti said the "Solo Meeting" was an initial meeting and not in the position of producing decisions. However the meeting had created a common understanding called "Solo Messages", he said.

The meeting had successfully clarified the vision of institutional framework for sustainable development.

All delegations had a common view that political commitment to sustainable development had to be strengthened.

The Solo meeting was a prelude to the Rio+20 conference in 2012. The idea of sustainable development council would be submitted as a proposal at the Rio+20 conference.

UN deputy secretary general for economic and social affairs Sha Zukang thanked the Indonesian government for its support to make the meeting successful and able to produce common understanding.

Sha said the meeting was a good meeting and a lot of ideas and messages had emerged out of it from delegates.
