Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The public works ministry through its Director General of Cipta Karya (Human Settlements) supports the green city program to deal with the impacts of climate change.

The green city program could become a solution to the greenhouse gas emission problem , Cipta Karya Director General Budi Yuwono said in his speech at the commemoration of World Habitat Day in Makassar, South Sulawesi, on Monday.

The event was attended by among others the public works ministry`s Spatial Planning Director General Imam S. Ernawi, South Sulawesi Governor Syahrul Yasin Limpo; Makassar Mayor Ilham Arief Sirajuddin, a number of NGO activities and university students.

Climate change had affected development of cities and human settlements. Its impacts include a rise in the sea level which was causing land abrasion, tidal waves, and extreme weather such as drought in certain regions and floods in other parts of the country.

Meanwhile, the public works minister said although urban growth had a positive impact on the economy it was also affecting the environment through its greenhouse gas emissions.

Sustainable development of cities should be promoted by developing green open space, using environmentally friendly production facilities, and saving energy optimally.

Urban development must be planned comprehensively to meet the needs of the present and future populations the minister said.(*)
