By its ratification, Indonesia confirmed its commitment to the objective of eliminating all nuclear test explosions worldwide.Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The European Union has hailed the Indonesian Parliament`s decision to ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT).
"I warmly welcome the ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) by Indonesia on December 6,2011 and congratulate the Indonesian Government for their achievement," Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission, said in a statement posted on the website of the CTBT secretariat, Thursday.
By its ratification, Indonesia confirmed its commitment to the objective of eliminating all nuclear test explosions worldwide, she said.
Indonesia, listed in the treaty among the states whose ratification is necessary for its entry into force, is the 156th country to become a state party to the CTBT.
"The entry into force of the CTBT is a major objective on the multilateral agenda, and remains a strategic priority for the European Union as an essential element of advancing nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation," she stated.
The European Union urges all states which have not yet signed or ratified the treaty, in particular the eight remaining states whose ratification is necessary for the entry into force of the treaty, to do so without further delay, according to her.
Indonesia`s House of Representatives at a plenary meeting on Tuesday (Dec 6) ratified the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT).
"Members of all factions in the parliament have agreed to ratify the CTBT," House Deputy Speaker Priyo Budi Santoso who chaired the plenary session said.(*)
