In a working meeting of the police leadership at the Police Headquarters here on Tuesday, the president said the police`s performance was currently good but some improvements were still needed.
"We have already known the objective condition of our police, their capability and its limitations both concerning personnel and equipment," he said.
The government has also been trying to carry out a modernization of the national police, according to the head of state.
He praised the police`s achievement in preventing and handling terrorism, as well as in tackling illegal drug-related crimes.
The police personnel had worked hard in dealing with those crimes and protecting security during important events such as Idul Fitri Muslim holiday, Christmas, New Year Eve, and Sea Games, and ASEAN Summits, he said.
Yudhoyono also appreciated the police`s achievement in improving its recruitment system which has become transparent and accountable.
"I hope all these could be maintained and further improved. I am sure that no one diligently thanks you for those performances. Once again, don`t be sad, human beings could forget to note it, but Allah always notes it," he said.
Among those present on the occasion were a number of ministers, the chief of the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) and three chiefs of staff of the army, air force and navy.
Chief of the National Police General Timur Pradopo in his report mentioned a number of police`s needs which include personnel and budget, up to 2014.
In response to the requests, the president said the government would fulfill the needs in accordance with its capability.
