Padang, West Sumatra (ANTARA News) - An earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale rocked Sijunjung district in West Sumatra province on Saturday, a natural disaster mitigation officer said.

"The quake which jolted Sijunjung was not so strong. It only had low magnitude," coordinating manager of the West Sumatra center for natural disaster mitigation operation control Ade Edward said.

Data from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) show the epicenter of the quake which struck at 02.27 p.m. on Saturday was located at 1.15 degrees southern latitude and 101.43 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 189 km.

Edward said no resident of Sijunjung district got panicked when the quake occurred.

"Based on a preliminary report, the local residents appeared to be calm when the 4.2-magnitude quake rattled the area," he said.

By Saturday evening, the center had not yet received a report of material damage caused by the temblor, he said.
