"The two main themes are green economy and institutional framework for sustainable development," said Michele Zaccheo, Director of the UN Information Centre (UNIC) in Jakarta, here on Wednesday.
He said green economy was one of the themes at Rio+20 because the world needed a new economic system that focused on sustainable development and lifting people out of poverty, including helping developing countries find a green path to development.
"There are four discussions on green economy. First, how economic activities should involve calculation of not only commercial costs, but also social and environmental costs. Taxes can be set for developed countries, as a fund for sustainable development in emerging countries, Michele stated.
"Second, how to create incentives for investment in sustainable economic activities. Businessmen receive incentives for implementing green measures, but I don`t know whether they get enough," he added.
"Third, how to develop a new fund for sustainable development for countries implementing the green economy," Michele said.
"And the last, how to develop an index of sustainable development," he added.
Michele noted that the green economy model could be implemented by taking as reference countries that have successfully implemented green measures, adding that good implementation depended on goodwill and commitment.
"Governments are expected to adopt clear and focused practical measures for implementing sustainable development, based on the many examples of success we have seen over the past 20 years," he said.
There are seven issues that are crucial to sustainable development: sustainable cities, resilience from disaster, energy, food, social equity, decent work, oceans, and water.
Rio+20 is a historic opportunity to pave a pathway to a safer, more equitable, cleaner, greener, and more prosperous world for all.
The conference will be attended by leaders, academics, parliament members, businessmen, journalists, etc., from more than 100 countries.
Coordinating Minister for People`s Welfare Agung Laksono said Indonesia would focus on water at the conference.(*)
