Kabul (ANTARA News/Xinhua-OANA) - Clashes between Taliban militants and Afghan police left six insurgents dead and two policemen injured on Tuesday, officials said.

In the first incident, according to officials, a group of armed Taliban stormed a police checkpoint in Ghazi Abad district of Kunar province 185 km east of Afghan capital Kabul but police returned fire.

"A group of Taliban militants attacked a police checkpoint in Ghazi Abad district at 04:00 a.m. local time today and police returned fire, killing four militants," provincial police chief Awaz Mohammad Nazari told Xinhua.

However, he stated one police constable sustained injury in the firefight that lasted for a while.

In a similar incident, two Taliban insurgents were killed and a police constable injured as gun battle erupted in Shah Walikot district of the southern Kandahar province Tuesday, a police officer Badshah Khan said, adding the militants had fled away.

Taliban-linked militancy usually increases in the spring and summer, commonly known as fighting season in the conflict-ridden Afghanistan. (*)
