"Badik island is close to Bunyu island in Tarakan but it is still within the district o Nunukan."
Nunukan (ANTARA News) - Oil reserves in the district of Nunukan in the Indonesian province of East Kalimantan are estimated to be bigger than those in Brunei Darussalam, according to a local official.

The district`s head of mining, energy and mineral resource service, Abdul Azis Muhamadiyah, confirmed the view here on Thursday saying that the district which consists of islands has rich natural resources.

He said however that some of them were not as yet exploited because they were not economically feasible.

Besides coal, results of survey by PT Star Energy show that oil reserve on the island of Badik near Tarakan city is estimated to be bigger than those in the oil wells in Brunei, he said.

"Badik island is close to Bunyu island in Tarakan but it is still within the district o Nunukan. According to PT Star Energy the oil reserve there could surpass that of Brunei," he said.

He said PT Star Energy has explored the oil block since four years ago and recently the company it conducted exploration again using a Korean ship.

Abdul Azis said the oil reserve in Badik island can be a source of energy for a long time but he declined to give figures.

He said no production has been carried out and so no activities have been seen there. According to the results of survey by PT Star Energi the biggest reserve is found under sea, he said.
