Jakarta (ANTARA News) - A total of 908 fatalities from road accidents have been recorded across the country during the traffic Ketupat Operation 2012, according to a national police spokesman.

"The number of traffic accident cases recorded during the 2012 Ketupat Operation has reached 5,233, in which 908 people were killed," said Brig Gen Boy Rafli Amar, the national police spokesman, here on Monday.

"The accidents were caused mainly due to the negligence of drivers, high-speed driving and careless overtaking," he pointed out.

As many as 1,505 people sustained severe injuries, while 5,139 escaped with minor bruises.

"Material losses recorded during the 16 days of operation amount to at least Rp11.8 billion," Boy noted.

On August 26 alone, the number of traffic accidents reached 227 in which 39 people died, 67 sustained severe injuries and 226 suffered minor injuries, while material losses amounted to Rp383,470,000, he added.

"Other factors such as carelessness, physical weakness and long-distance travel also led to the accidents. Therefore, people should be careful and learn from their experience," Boy stated.
