"We will soon issue the regulation on technical procedures for importing electronic products, such as laptops, tablets, and other communication devices, including handphones and smartphones," Deputy Trade Minister Bayu Krisnamurthi said here on Tuesday.
He stated that the regulation was aimed at protecting the consumers.
Most consumers find it difficult to distinguish between legal and illegal imported electronic products, Krisnamurthi noted.
Usually, the illegal suppliers sell the products without providing supporting tools, such as spare parts. Besides, the quality of such products is not guaranteed, he continued.
Therefore, Krisnamurthi explained, the ministry will issue a regulation requiring all importers to be officially registered.
"The importer must report to the ministry about its importation plans at least a year before the activity actually takes place," he stated.
The importer should also provide details about the nature and quantity of the product, Krisnamurthi said.
"The technical specifications of the electronic products must be in line with the regulation of Communication and Information Ministry or Trade Ministry," he pointed out.
"That way, the circulation of the electronic products can be controlled," Krisnamurthi added. (*)
