"Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Online sales have given a boost to baby trafficking because the illegal activity is no longer limited by distance, according to a member of House Commission VIII, Ledia Hanifa.
"Online sales make baby trafficking an easier affair," she said in Jakarta on Monday.
Ledia, a politician from Justice and Prosperity Party (PKS), noted that baby trafficking took place in the society because some people wanted to make quick money.
"Besides, there is a baby trafficking syndicate," she pointed out.
"Previously, a page on tokobagus.com featured an advertisement under the account name of Farkhan in which two 18-month-old babies were up for sale at Rp10 million each," Ledia noted.
Therefore, she called on the government to immediately crack down on such activities by imposing more stringent regulations.
"The police should investigate more deeply into baby trafficking activities," Ledia said.
Meanwhile, the Director of Special Criminal Investigation, Senior Commissioner Sufyan Sharif, stated that the police had discovered the online advertisement on tokobagus.com since a long time ago.
The police have been communicating with tokobagus.com management in order to trace the advertiser selling babies," he added.
