Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian currency rupiah tended to be stable on Tuesday morning with Bank Indonesia standing guard over its movements.

"Rupiah is still kept in a safe level hovering between 9,730 to 9,740 per dollar," Samuel Sekuritas` economic Lana Soelistianingsih said here on Tuesday.

The currency traded at the level of 9,735 per US dollar in inter-bank transactions losing slightly by three points from 9,732 on Monday`s close.

Lana said the Indonesian economy grew 6.02 percent in the first quarter of this year compared with the same period last year.

"The main growth driver is still the public consumption, which grew 5.17 percent," she said.

She noted, however, the government spending slowed contributing only 0.03 percentage point to the country`s economic growth.

Utilization of the state budget funds has been slow, she said.

Chief researcher of Trust Securities, Reza Priyambada, said the 6.02 percent growth recorded for the country`s economy in the first quarter of this year was strong enough to prop up rupiah amod pressure from the US dollar.

Positive external sentiments with an increase in the foreign exchange reserves of South Korea, and encouraging retail sales in Australia and expected increase in Europe`s manufacture index contributed to domestic exchange rate, Reza said.(*)
