Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Several political parties and a group of veterans held a commemoration ceremony for Indonesia`s 68th Independence Day, marking the exact moment of the country`s proclamation of independence, here on Saturday.

The Great Indonesia Movement Party, led by party chairman Prabowo Subianto, organized a ceremony in the yard outside its office in Ragunan, South Jakarta.

The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), meanwhile, conducted its own commemoration ceremony at its office in Lenteng Agung, South Jakarta.

However, the party`s chairwoman, Megawawi Soekarnoputri, former president of Indonesia, was unable to attend the ceremony since she is still mourning the death of her husband Taufiq Kiemas.

In her absence, the ceremony at the PDI-P`s office was led by the party`s secretary-general Tjahjo Kumolo.

To ensure the ceremony ran smoothly, some PDI-P members diverted traffic on Lenteng Agung Street as attendants sang the national anthem, Indonesia Raya, while the red-and-white flag was raised.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian Veteran Legion, together with a group of Indonesian military personnel, conducted a commemoration ceremony at the Proclamation Monument in Central Jakarta.

Proclamation Monument Square hosts the statues of Indonesia`s first president, Soekarno, and vice president, Mohammad Hatta. On August 17, 1945, at this location, Soekarno had read the proclamation manuscript.***1***
