Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa visited North Korea from Oct. 21 to 23 to discuss bilateral issues and stability in the region, according to the ministry`s press statement received here on Wednesday.

During his stay in Pyongyang, Marty proposed sending an Indonesian business delegation to North Korea to examine the potential for economic cooperation between the two countries. The proposal is in line with North Korea`s plan to open a special economic zone in each of its provinces.

Apart from economic cooperation, Marty also reiterated Indonesia`s commitment to providing capacity building opportunities to North Korea.

On the issue of regional stability, Marty said Indonesia understands North Korea`s perspective on the prospect of stability in the Korean Peninsula.

"(The purpose of) my visit to Pyongyang, this time, is also to deliver President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono`s letter to North Korea`s leader Kim Jong Un. President Yudhoyono, in his letter, has reiterated the importance of good relations between the two countries," he remarked, adding that there are more sectors open to potential cooperation between the two countries in the future.

President Yudhoyono, in his letter, emphasized the need for stability in the region, especially in the Korean peninsula, as a precondition to developing the countries around it to benefit the people.

"The president also reaffirmed the need for a new approach to enhance communications between North and South Korea," stated Marty.
