"The people should look into the tract record of the candidate. Compare their wealth with their income to see if they are honest people," Deputy Chairman of The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Adnan Pandu Praja said.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) expressed pessimism about the results of the forthcoming legislative elections.

"We are pessimistic that the results of the elections would be better (than the results of the previous elections) on a number of factors," deputy chairman of the anti graft agency Adnan Pandu Praja said in a mass media discussion promoting call for the election of leaders who support the fight against corruption."

The country will hold legislative election next month to be followed later this year by presidential election.

Adnan said political parties held no integrity test for their candidates and the candidates show no own visions in the campaigns and they spoke only about things as they are told by their parties.

In addition the honorary council of the House of Representatives failed to function and political parties did not create a system for public complaints, he said.

"With those facts we doubt that the election would turn out good quality members of the new House of Representatives," he said.

The House of Representatives has been considered one of the countrys most corrupt institutions.

KPK, therefore seeks to promote a slogan Elect honest candidates, he said said.

"The people should look into the tract record of the candidate. Compare their wealth with their income to see if they are honest people," he said.

He said KPK would launch a format of pledge of integrity for candidates who claim to be in support of the fight against corruption.

The candidates should agree to report their wealth or authorize KPK to confiscate wealth not included in the report, he said.

In addition, the candidate should resign if they failed to carry out their pre election political campaigns, he said.

The pact should be signed by chairmen (chairwomen) of political parties as they are the one having the authority to replace their legislators, he said.

According to the Home Affairs Ministry, there are 200,688 candidates scrambling for a seat at the House of Representatives, regional legislative assemblies and regional representative council which together have 19,699 seats .

"We will prepare the list and hopefully they agree to put their signature on it," Adnan said.

Another KPK deputy chairman Bambang Widjojanto, who was present at the discussion, said illegal gratification, is potential involving incumbent candidates.

In the past six months , circulation of money had been tremendously large, Bambang said.

"It looked like Indonesia is recording a double digit growth rate, but in money circulation not in economy," Bambang said.

"We in the gratification directorate are intensifying control and we have sent a letter to incumbent candidates against gratification," he said.

Donators are allowed only to deal with political parties but the donation could easily go to individual candidates, he said.

The law on election is not clear about donations that illegal gratification is highly potential, he said.(*)
