Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has congratulated Htin Kyaw on being elected the new president of Myanmar.

"On behalf of the Indonesian government, I congratulate Kyaw after being elected as the president of Myanmar," Jokowi stated here on Wednesday.

According to Widodo, Indonesia and Myanmar can intensify cooperation, particularly in the economic and trade sectors as well as to promote democracy.

Myanmar has voted Kyaw as the president through a democratic election held by the countrys parliament on last Tuesday.

President Jokowi also posted congratulatory remarks through his Twitter account: "Congratulation for the new elected President Htin Kyaw. We will continue to increase cooperation in various sectors with Myanmar - Jkw."

Kyaw was the ex-driver of Myanmar activist, Aung San Suu Kyi. He won the election after securing 360 of the total 652 ballots.

According to the Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry, the presidential election in Myanmar sends an important message of a political transition that occurred through a democratic process.

The Myanmar presidential election process began after the general elections were held last November in order to meet the aspirations of the Myanmar people.

The Indonesian government reaffirmed to continue supporting the country to implement reforms and the democratic process as well as sustainable reconciliation in Myanmar.

Indonesia is also keen to increase cooperation with Myanmar in bilateral, regional, and international forums.

The bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and Myanmar can bring prosperity to the people and contribute to peace and stability at the regional and international level.(*)
