Sukabumi, W Java (ANTARA News)- An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter Scale jolted Sukabumi city, West Java, on Monday at 6:15 a.m. local time, causing local inhabitants to rush out of homes in panic.

"We were shocked because the quake was very strong. We just ran outside although it was raining," Yeni Haryani, a resident of Benteng, Warudoyong sub-district, said here.

The tremor was also felt by residents of Sukabumi District, Pelabuhanratu, Bekasi and Jakarta.

The quakes epicenter was located at 8.36 degree southern latitude and 106.18 eastern longitude, some 179 km southwest of Sukabumi City, and at a depth of 10 km.

Personnel of the local offices of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) and the Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD) are still checking possible impacts of the earthquake.(*)
