"The training is intended to provide assistance to them regarding security operations of the 2018 APEC. The 2018 APEC will be held in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea," National Police spokesperson Sr. Com. Martinus Sitompul said here on Thursday.
Security issues on the border of Papua (Indonesia) and Papua New Guinea include cross-border security related to transnational crime potentials, such as smuggling, illicit trade in natural wealth and animal protection, narcotics crimes, and protection of Indonesian workers in Papua New Guinea.
"Many Indonesian workers are recruited and employed by Malaysian companies in Papua New Guinea," he stated.
In addition, an armed criminal group (KKB) in Papua uses the Papua New Guinea region as a place of power consolidation.
The training for Special Service Division (SSD) of Papua New Guinea Police lasted for three weeks from Nov 13 to Dec 2, 2017, at the Specialist Training Center, Mac Gregor Area, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
The training can strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries.
The Indonesian National Police expected that the bilateral cooperation could be enhanced in the form of border security cooperation program, particularly in cross-border check points.
