Amin, who is also the Rais Aam (General Chairman) of the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board, is a multi-talented ulema. Apart from his involvement in the field of religion, he has also had been a representative of the people in Parliament.
Born in Tangerang, Banten, on March 11, 1943, he began his education at the People`s School as well as the Madrasah Ibtidaiyyah (Elementry School) in Tangerang, which he completed in 1955.
He chose the Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School in Jombang to continue his higher education until 1961. He then graduated from the Faculty of Islamic Law, Ibn Chaldun University, Bogor, in 1967.
He is the son of KH Mohamad Amin, a great cleric in the West Tangerang region, and the great-grandson of Shaykh Nawawi al-Bantani, a scholar from Banten who was highly respected among Islamic intellectuals, mainly in Mecca.
Shaykh Nawawi al-Bantani is one of the Imams in the Grand Mosque and a scholar who has written 115 books, covering the fields of jurisprudence, monotheism, mysticism, interpretation, and hadith.
Amin is also one of the Muslim intellectuals referring to religious fatwas.
Islamic intellectuals
Amin is the General Chairperson of the Ulema Council in 2015-2020 period. He has served as the Chairman of the Central MUI Fatwa Commission.
In addition, he has also become the Chairman of the National Sharia Board of MUI and MUI institution that deals with sharia economic development.
The books he has written include the Bright Prospects of Islamic Banking, Straightening the Meaning of Jihad, Preventing Terrorism, Fighting Terrorism with Faith, Fatwa in the Islamic Law System, Halal Products: Protecting and Reassuring, Harmony in Diversity: The Dynamics of Religion-State Relations, and a New Era of Indonesian Islamic Economics: From Jurisprudence to the Practice of Islamic Economics.
Amin was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Sharia Economic Law from Syarif Hidayatullah Islamic State University.
In the political field, Amin`s experience cannot be underestimated. He has served as the Chairman of the DKI Jakarta DPRD PPP Faction and Chairperson of the DKI Jakarta DPRD Commission A.
He was also a politician of the National Awakening Party. In the party founded by former President Abdurrahman Wahid, he served as the first Chairman of the Shuro Council.
His struggle in the PKB led him to become a member of the Republic of Indonesia MPR, Chair of the House of Representatives Commission VI, and chairman of the DPR-RI VI commission.
