Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesian vice presidential candidate Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno visited former first lady Shinta Nuriyah at her home in Ciganjur, South Jakarta, on Monday to promote "Silaturrahim," or Islamic brotherhood.

The former Jakarta deputy governor, who is currently the running mate of Prabowo Subianto for next year`s presidential election, arrived at the home of Nuriyah, the wife of late former president Abdurrahman "Gus Dur" Wahid, at around 12:46 p.m. local time.

Shortly after his arrival, he then performed a "dzuhur," or midday prayer, at the Al Munawaroh Mosque, which is located in front of Nuriyah`s home. He was welcomed by Gus Dur`s daughter, Yenny Wahid.

Nuriyah, who wore a black "kebaya" and white veil, welcomed her guest while seated on her wheelchair. Uno then knelt in front of her and repeatedly kissed her right hand.

The host offered him food and drink but he politely said he was fasting. Like Uno, who has regularly been performing the non-obligatory fasts on Mondays and Thursdays, the former first lady was also fasting.

The courtesy call was closed for journalists.

Incumbent President Joko Widodo and the coalition parties supporting his efforts to grab a victory in the 2019 Presidential Election had selected Ma`ruf Amin to be his running mate.

As cadre of the Indonesian Democratic Party-Struggle (PDIP), the incumbent head of state`s presidential nomination is backed by the Megawati Soekarnoputri-led party and eight other political parties.

The eight parties comprise the PPP, Golkar Party, National Democratic Party, National Awakening Party, the United Indonesia Party, Indonesian Justice and Unity Party, and Indonesia Solidarity Party.

This pair is challenged by Chief Patron of the Great Indonesia Movement Prabowo Subianto and his running mate, Sandiaga Uno. They are supported by the Muslim-based Prosperous Justice Party, National Mandate Party, and Democratic Party.

The two competing pairs have been approaching the influential figures of the Nahdlatul Ulama, Indonesia`s largest Islamic organization that has tens of millions of members across the archipelago.
