"The assistance will be channeled as a second step after the Government of the Republic of Korea announces that it will deliver aid of US$1 million to help overcome the emergency conditions on Sulawesi Island that was affected by the earthquake and tsunami on Sept 28," a press statement from the South Korean Embassy noted on Friday.
The South Korean government had decided to send military transport aircraft and 31 military crews to operate the aircraft during the time specified in the affected area.
This was done considering the constraints in handling evacuation and distribution of logistical assistance due to damaged infrastructure at the Mutiara Sis Al Jufri Airport in Palu.
In addition, the cargo planes will carry 130 tents for temporary evacuation sites for disaster victims.
"The Government of the Republic of Korea hopes that this assistance will facilitate the recovery process for the people and Indonesian government that are facing a difficult situation," the statement noted.
The government and people of Korea also prayed that the situation in Indonesia would recover quickly, and that Indonesians in the affected areas would immediately recover from their depression.
An earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale shook Donggala and Palu City on Sept 28 and caused several natural shocks, such as tsunamis, soil liquefaction, and landslides.
According to data from the National Disaster Management Agency, as of Friday, the number of dead has reached 1,571.
In addition, 2,549 people suffered severe injuries and received hospital treatment.
