Jakarta, (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian government has assured that it will import 100 thousand tons of corn soon to meet domestic demand for poultry feed.

"The agriculture minister has proposed that we need to import corn immediately," Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Darmin Nasution said after chairing a limited coordination meeting here on Friday.

The corn import is intended to meet demand from small and medium scale layer poultry raisers, he said.

The government has appointed state-owned logistics company Perum Bulog to import corn to curb its soaring price in the domestic market, he said.

"Let Bulog import it immediately," he said.

Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman said the corn price rose due to high demand from poultry breeders.

According to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the area of corn plantations in the country continues to shrink.

Also present at the meeting were Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita and Perum Bulog President Director Budi Waseso.
