The chairmanship of Mrs. Foreign Minister, who will lead the session, shows how high is Indonesia's attention to the issue of peace in the Middle East, particularly Palestine.Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, as president of the the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the May 2019 period, will lead the council's session in New York on May 22 in a discussions of the latest situation in the Middle East.
"The chairmanship of Mrs. Foreign Minister, who will lead the session, shows how high is Indonesia's attention to the issue of peace in the Middle East, particularly Palestine," Day-to-Day Coordinator of the UNSC Task Force of the Indonesian Foreign Ministry Hari Prabowo said in a statement released on Thursday.
The session will discuss two reports from Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General for Middle East Peace Nickolay Mladenov, and from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
"Several discussions that we predict will surface are the continuation of the peace process in Palestine and actions that may endanger it, including the construction of illegal settlements in the occupied land," he said.
The other issues that will be discussed during the session are the latest conditions in Syria following the escalation of tensions in Idlib, progress in the implementation of cooperation among members of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), and the security situation in Yemen.
The Indonesian foreign minister attended a UNSC open session on the Middle East last January and became a keynote speaker at the UN Forum on Palestine in early April.
On May 9, Indonesia, in its capacity as UNSC president, held an informal discussion which came in the form of the "Arria Formula" on Palestine.
