Kediri, E Java (ANTARA) - Several thousand people from the impoverished sections of society made a beeline for receiving Rp50 thousand alms from public-listed cigarette manufacturer PT Gudang Garam Tbk in East Java's Kediri District on Wednesday.

"Today, May 29, 2019, is the last working day before Eid-al-Fitr. Gudang Garam is again distributing alms, popularly known as salam tempel," spokesman for PT Gudang Garam, Tbk. Iwhan Tri Cahyono remarked.

The amount of alms this year more than doubled in comparison with Rp20 thousand in the previous years. This year recipients -- adults and children as well as infants -- received Rp50 thousand each.

PT Gudang Garam has regularly distributed Eid-al-Fitr alms among the poor every year since the founder, Suryo Wonowidjojo, initiated it in 1958 when the company was established.

"Apparently, the distribution of alms is a form of manifestation of Gudang Garam's social care for the nearby community, especially the poor," he emphasized.

Cahyono estimated that some 3,500 people had lined up for alms on Wednesday, lesser than over 10 thousand in the previous years.

The company employed some 350 personnel, including internal security and police officers as well as medical workers, to ascertain that the distribution of alms ran smoothly.

He expressed gratitude to God that the activity was held in a smooth and peaceful manner.

Some recipients, segregated into various groups on the basis of gender and age, admitted to having lined up for the alms at dawn.
