This statement was made in response to the mass power outage Sunday, August 4, in parts of Java Island.
However, the cause of the outage needs to be assessed first, Antariksawan said. If it was not caused by any problem in the power plant, such as transmission, then there was no reason to replace the old equipment with a new power plant.
"What is more important about this outage is whether or not we have a backup supplier and precautionary measures in dealing with this kind of condition," he stressed.
Nuclear power plants can be an alternative for national energy security, especially in an emergency, he further stressed. With NPP, the State electricity company (PLN) does not have to wait for alternate energy sources to maintain the supply and backup, he added.
Earlier, power outages occurred in most parts of Java. The main problem was the disconnection of transmission from the Ungaran-Pemalang northern circuit of the 500-Kilo Volt (kV) Java-Bali electricity system which affected the supply in most parts of Java, the PLN stated.
