Jakarta (ANTARA) - Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Minister I Gusti Ayu Bintang Puspayoga affirmed that the dismal participation of the female workforce in Indonesia has become a challenge for the women’s empowerment program for the 2020-2024 period.

"Hence, the president has ordered to bring about improvements in the women empowerment program through entrepreneurship," Bintang stated during a hearing before Commission VIII of the House of Representatives in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Bintang affirmed that the ministry will work closely with the state firms and other government institutions in the program.

Other challenges for women’s empowerment and child protection program are the high rate of violence against women and children, child labor, and child marriage.

"Other challenges are the high rate of violence against women and children and the prevalence of child labor that also remains high," she stated.

The government and House of Representatives has revised Law No. 1 of 1974 on marriage as part of the efforts to prevent child marriages.

Chairman of Commission VIII Yandri Susanto echoed the commission's willingness to support the ministry to implement its women’s empowerment and child protection program.
