"This extreme weather phenomenon was forecast by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) that recommended an alert status in the region,” Agus Wibowo, the BNPB spokesman, noted in a statement here on Monday.
Flooding inundated Buludua, Balusu Village, Barru District, South Sulawesi, according to the South Sulawesi disaster mitigation office (BPBD).
Heavy rains led to the local rivers overflowing their banks and affecting 121 households.
The three sub-districts of Balusu, Soppeng Riaja, and Mallusetasi in Barru District were hit by whirlwinds.
Three houses and a bridge incurred serious damage owing to the whirlwind in the Oring area, Balusu Sub-district.
Papepare Town was also inundated on Sunday following incessant heavy rains.
Wibowo noted that the extreme hydrometeorological phenomena was currently headed toward central and eastern Indonesia.
The BMKG had earlier issued early warnings -- ranging from vigilant to alert status -- at several areas.
