Jakarta (ANTARA) - Big data is an important asset that can determine the future of national development, according to Hasto Wardoyo, head of the National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN).

"How the data serves as a solid foundation for development will later be a determinant in future," Wardoyo stated during a webinar themed "Big Data What and For What" held here on Monday.

The BKKBN head elaborated that big data is a crucial foundation for seeing real facts and phenomena on the field.

Wardoyo further explained that through data, the BKKBN is able to accurately map out family problems in society and the causes of poverty in families.

Without proper mapping owing to the lack of valid data, programs targeting family development will then prove to be futile, he cautioned.

Wardoyo highlighted the need for sound planning based on valid and accountable data, so that the direction of future development will be in accordance with the expected target.

"In 2021, the BKKBN will conduct family data collection using a new performance indicator called the Family Development Index (IPK)," he revealed.

The index is part of an approach to map out family problems in society. With the application of the Family Development Index in data collection as big data, the BKKBN seeks to assess family performance.

Moreover, in accordance with President Joko Widodo's directive, the agency is also striving to optimize the implementation of policies by making good use of data collection.

"We certainly hope that later data collection would help us in the processes of good planning, decision-making, and conducting some evaluation. We can also strive to use it as a confirmation tool to help us formulate policies," Wardoyo stated.
