The government and the House of Representatives (DPR) are discussing an effort regarding tax reform because the world is constantly transforming, creating opportunities that can also threaten Indonesia if we (Indonesia) do not changeJakarta (ANTARA) - Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said, the government's tax reforms are crucial to help the nation overcome various challenges arising from global development.
"The government and the House of Representatives (DPR) are discussing an effort regarding tax reform because the world is constantly transforming, creating opportunities that can also threaten Indonesia if we (Indonesia) do not change," she said at the 76th Tax Day commemoration ceremony in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Indonesia is aware that all global changing trends could create great opportunities as well as threats, such as massive technological developments, the minister emphasized.
This has encouraged the government to continue formulating steps to uphold the interests of the nation and state, one of which is tax reform, she said.
One of the reforms pertains to information technology (IT) systems and databases as well as the development of applications for updating the core system of tax administration, she informed.
The Directorate General of Taxes (DJP) must also continue building a fair and simple taxation system, while still managing to serve the public in an accountable and professional way, Indrawati said.
"I hope the DJP continues to develop applications so that it will be easier for taxpayers to carry out their tax compliance," she added.
According to Indrawati, tax reforms through the development of information technology have remarkably supported the performance of the DJP, which was finding it challenging to collect taxes amid the pandemic.
