Indonesia's badminton women's doubles pair -- Polii and Rahayu -- won a gold medal after defeating Chinese duo Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan, the former world champions, in straight sets, 21-19, 21-15, at the Musashino Forest Sport Plaza, Tokyo, on Monday.
On winning the final point, Polii and Rahayu fell to the floor with tears in their eyes. The pair was visibly moved on having made history by winning the first medal in the women's doubles badminton event for Indonesia.
It was the first gold for Indonesia at the Tokyo Games and the eighth in the country’s Olympic history.
"A historical win! Greysia Polii and Apriyani Rahayu secure #INA's first ever #Badminton women's doubles Olympic gold - and the nation's first of #Tokyo2020," wrote the Olympic website //olympics.com/tokyo-2020.

In addition to the gold medal, the Indonesian badminton team also won a bronze after Anthony Ginting successfully defeated Guatemala's Kevin Cordon, with a score of 21-11, 21-13.
Having pocketed a gold, a silver, and three bronze medals, Indonesia is currently ranked 35th in the medals tally at the Tokyo Olympics.
Indonesia is ranked 47th in the final standings of the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Until its closing on August 8, 2021, some 127 gold medals are up for grabs at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
