"The Papua Bangkit Sports Complex represents President Joko Widodo's commitment to building Papua," Infrastructure Director of the ministry's Directorate General of Human Settlements, Iwan Suprijanto, stated in Jayapura, Saturday.
The sports complex, constructed with a budget totaling Rp287 billion (around US$20.9 million), is topped by an 86-metre long-span steel roof, the widest in Indonesia, Suprijanto pointed out.
The Papua Bangkit Sports Complex is also equipped with a textile ducting air control system that is more sophisticated than the Gelora Bung Karno Sports Stadium in Jakarta, he remarked.
"Wind-sensitive sports, such as badminton, would not be affected by the weather conditions, as a textile ducting air control system is installed at this facility," Suprijanto explained.

Suprijanto expressed optimism that the Papua Bangkit complex would host prestigious badminton tournaments, such as Indonesia Open and Indonesia Masters, after the PON XX National Games come to a close.
The director pointed out construction marvels achieved at the sports complex building that has been recognized by the Indonesian World Records Museum (MURI).
"The MURI has recognized three sophisticated construction marvels achieved by this sports complex building," Suprijanto stated.
Earlier, President Joko Widodo had inaugurated the Papua Bangkit Sports Complex on Saturday morning, being his first agenda of the day during his official visit to Papua to open the PON XX National Games scheduled on Saturday evening.
The complex comprises aquatic sports, cricket, roller skating, rowing, and archery sporting arenas totaling seven that were simultaneously inaugurated today.
"The president's simultaneous inauguration of the seven sporting arena plaques is to officially declare the sporting arenas open for the PON XX National Games and marks the completion of the Public Works and Public Housing Ministry works at the venue," Suprijanto stated.
